Weather steel is a group of steel alloys that are designed to develop a rusted appearance when exposed to the elements, eliminating the need for painting. The rust forms a protective layer that protects against moisture, oxygen, and pollution. Corten steel is also machinable and weldable and is lighter than carbon steel.
Weather steel is often used in unpainted applications such as bridges, guard rails, sign poles, and highway structures.
Weather steel develops an orange patina in the early stages, before darkening to an orange-brown hue.
Weather steel plates are available in a variety of gauges, including 3/16″, 1/4″, 5/16″, 3/8″, 1/2″, 5/8″, 3/4″ and 1″.
